CURRENT VACANCIES
Seaweed Production Technician
£27000-30000 FTE (salary dependent on experience) + pension
1 year, fixed term contract, commencing March 2026
37.5 hours per week. Monday to Friday 9am – 5.30pm.
Flexible working hours at certain times – including occasional weekend work - with time off in lieu.
Remote working away from the area is not practicable for this role.
PRIMARY LOCATION | Kyle of Lochalsh, Scottish Highlands
PURPOSE OF ROLE | Reporting to the Seaweed Production Manager, the Production Technician will be
responsible for safe, efficient seaweed processing for the purpose of supporting
the growth of the sustainable seaweed farming and small-scale hand-harvest
industry in Scotland. This is a physical, hands-on role.
This position includes aiding in testing new ways to process farmed and wild-seaweed
for end-markets, including food, bioplastics and the agricultural industry – using
production line equipment at Eco Cascade’s site in Kyle of Lochalsh.
Additionally, outside of the farming harvest season, the Technician will be hands-on in wild
species identification and sustainable gathering of wild-seaweeds on the local
foreshore, to be processed in batches in our Kyle facility.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Processing Operations
Weighing, washing, chopping, drying seaweed using purpose-built machinery and production line
· Operating forklift and pallet lifter (formal forklift training provided if necessary)
· Ensuring Health and Safety protocols are followed, and embracing continuous
improvement as systems evolve (H&S training to be provided). PPE must be worn and maintained.
· Production reporting – recording traceability data as required
· Liaising with end-customers for delivery of dried product
· Ensure plant is kept clean and appropriately sanitised, using designated marine-
safe cleaning products in line with our HACCP standards
· All production, tools, maintenance, and cleaning equipment to be kept in an
organised manner to facilitate thorough cleaning and to avoid trips
Seaweed Wild-Harvest
On-the-job training with wild-harvest specialist consultant – species
identification, skills in site survey, implementing Sustainable Harvest
· Strategy; weather and tidal assessment; foreshore safety assessment
· Scheduling and carrying out foreshore hand-harvest according to seasonality
· Undertaking site foreshore surveys to assess volumes and harvest plan
· Carrying out safe & sustainable harvest, following Sustainable Harvest
· Strategy and relevant Nature Scot or other stakeholder guidance issued from time to time
· Delivery of batch harvest to Kyle, dispersal into packaging and handling for drying
Quality Assurance and safety
· Following SOPs for process efficiency and compliance with
· HACCP for all food-grade handling requirements (training in HACCP Level 1 & 2 will be provided)
· Ensure all tasks are carried out in accordance with agreed Health and Safety
· Procedures (on-site training to be provided as required)
Communications
· Internal communications with the team at all times, keeping clear and open lines of communication
· Contribute observations on continuous improvement of processes to improve throughput and efficiency
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for this role:
· Previous work in aquaculture industry in Scotland an advantage but not essential.
· Knowledge in seaweed cultivation, marine science or ocean conservation desirable but not essential.
· Degree or equivalent work-based engineering background an advantage.
· Most important is an interest in learning about a new industry and a flexible and
practical approach to working to meet demands of the job
· Ability to work in a small team in a busy and often noisy and cold environment using clear communication and listening
· Good understanding of how production equipment works - on the job training will be provided but requires ability to take ownership post-training
· Knowledge of basic safety rules and PPE - further courses and training will be provided as required
· Valid driver's license required
· Ability to work in sometimes challenging environment - While the work is mostly
indoors, it will often be performed in a wet environment with hot and cool temperatures at different stages of processing.
· Capacity to perform manual labour, ability to stand for extended periods of time
· Excellent work ethic, a team player attitude with an appreciation for order and task completion

Casual Seasonal Processing Jobs
£13 per hour, casual hours, April - June 2026
Location: Kyle of Lochalsh, Scottish Highlands
We need casual staff to help with processing seaweed in Spring 2025. No previous experience necessary, on the job training provided. You must be comfortable doing manual work on the seaweed processing production line - including cleaning duties - and be on your feet for a length of time.
