Why Scottish seaweed?

The sustainability of seaweed is outstanding - it is the fastest growing bio-mass on the planet and flourishes without the need for land, fresh water, pesticides or fertiliser.

Seaweed farming in the clear waters of the west coast of Scotland Scotland is governed with strict environmental stewardship & traceability.

Seaweed forests promote marine diversity, enhance water quality , absorb  nitrogen and store carbon during growth.

Seaweed serves as a replacement for fossil-fuel dependent foods and materials - it is a protein-rich food source for both the human and animals, and important compounds from seaweed can be used in the plastics, textiles, pharma and cosmetics industry.

World-class & Traceable

We want the Scottish seaweed industry to thrive. Pristine waters, strict environmental management & traceability make Scottish seaweed stand out as a premium product across a range of applications.

  • World-class Kelp

Cultivation in Scotland is mainly focussed on sugar kelp and winged kelp. Lines are set in Autumn or early winter and harvest begins in the Spring. The emerging Scottish seaweed industry is uniquely positioned to produce a world-class, added-value seaweed product, and Eco Cascade is the first port of call for processing at harvest time.

  • Tracability

Traceability means there is the potential for Scottish-grown seaweed to be included in Life Cycle Analyses.

Farms off the west coast of Scotland are small by global standards. This helps to ensure that the environmental impact is managed and measurable, and additional biodiversity is enhanced in the locations where they are sited rather than being industrial monocultural concerns.

  • High Standards

Scottish seaweed is a truly sustainable product - the regulation and structure of the industry guides growth that is in harmony with the environment and surrounding coastal communities. And, the industry supports fair labour practices and provide the resources for premium quality products.
